Women’s Basketball suffered a close 68-64 loss against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Herd now falls to 5-13 (0-7 in Sun Belt play) on the season.
“We just did not score enough in the fourth,” Marshall head coach Juli Fulks said. “Fourteen points in the fourth is just not going to get it done in that type of game. We had lots of opportunities at the rim. We missed some shots that were right there. We need those to fall. I feel for our team because they are battling and sticking with it.”
Marshall started strong during the game, building a 12-point lead during the first quarter. Even though App State was able to rebound back, Marshall took a 3-point lead, 29-26 into the half.
The Herd narrowly outscored the Mountaineers 21-20 in the 3rd, but App State was able to take the win from 22-14 4th quarter.
“We had another really, really good start,” Fulks said. “I thought defensively, we had a lot of really good coverages.”
C.C. Mays was able to get her first double-double since the 2020-2021 season, scoring 13 points with 10 rebounds during the game.
Aislynn Hayes also finished with 13 points for the Herd while Maddie Kellione also hit double-figures with 10 points.
“I’m really proud of our team for getting the bounce-back win,” App State head coach Alaura Sharp said. “We overcame a lot to find a way. These close games will grow and mature us for the future.”
App State’s Zada Porter led the Mountaineers with 15 points and five assists on the day and drilled a perfect 3-of-3 from the arc in addition to grabbing four rebounds and a team-high four steals. The game marked Porter’s sixth game as App State’s top scorer during the season.
The Herd and the Mountaineers had similar stats in both field goal percentage (.404 for Marshall and .386 for App State) and for three-point field goal percentage (.400 for Marshall and .423 for App State) but the Mountaineers gained favor for the game in its free throw percentage (.667 for Marshall and .813 for App State).
The Herd looks to get its first Sun Belt win of the season Wednesday evening against the Georgia Southern University Eagles. The game will start at 6 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center.
