Saturday evening was the first football game where Marshall’s clear bag policy was put into practice, with all sporting events requiring the usage of see-through bags at campus sporting events.
Andrew Brown, the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities & Game Operations said, “The clear bag policy, implemented almost universally at the professional and collegiate level, improves the fan experience on many levels.”
Many benefits influenced the decision to implement a clear bag policy including both efficiency and safety benefits for all parties Brown mentioned.
Brown went on to say, “The clear bag policy greatly improves our ability to ensure a safe environment for all patrons.”
The decision wasn’t difficult as he said, “Ultimately it was a topic that was brought forth and unanimously agreed upon from administration on down.”
Despite the positive benefits, potential problems could arise, he said, “We had an understanding that there may be initial pushback because of the change. However, we know that we have the fans’ best interests and safety in mind, so we are confident all will work out well.”
Meanwhile, Marshall Police Chief Terry stated that the screening process will remain the same, and the clear bag policy will help expedite the process.
Brown also said, “Security can check bags, process a ticket, and let the fan in much quicker with the clear bag policy.”
He went on to say, “Prioritizing our fans, their safety, and in-game experience, will always lead the way in our decision-making process. This policy greatly enhances all those areas.”
The clear bag policy excludes small clutches that are no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” and the clear bags can be no larger than 12” x 6” x 12” or guests can bring a gallon Ziploc bag to hold their belongings.
Clear bags with Marshall accessories are currently available for purchase at the Marshall University Bookstore, Glenn’s Sporting Goods and The Hip Eagle.
