As part of the preparation for the new semester, some students are using their favorite study spots to handle their work.
The Parthenon interviewed eight students across various grade levels. Of the eight students, six students said they preferred to study in Drinko Library. The other two interviewees said they split their time between Drinko and their dorms.
For junior Will Erling, he said Drinko Library is appealing because of how simple it is to reserve a study room.
“Super well organized,” Erling said. “It’s very well set up to where the schedules for everybody works out, and you don’t have to find anybody for a space, and it’s nice and quiet, easy to focus.”
Similar to Erling, another student valued the peace and focus that Drinko provided. For freshman JJ Browning, that peace was found in the study rooms.
“I think the study rooms there is just peaceful,” Browning said. “It’s quiet, and I just feel more focused. I feel more focused in Drinko than I ever do my dorm.”
Most of the students said Drinko’s resources were what made it their favorite study spot. For sophomore Lance Adkins, Drinko’s resources offered him a place to relax.
“Near the top floor, they have these special rooms, and they got reclining chairs in them,” Adkins said. “Half the time I’m studying, and half the time I just kind of sleep in the chair.”
Jordan Hazlewood, a freshman at Marshall University, said he preferred Drinko’s resources.
“They had a safe room for, like, I guess I can feel stress, like mental health or whatever,” Hazlewood said. “It had beanbags and cool – like, just felt really comfortable.”
Hannah Jones, a sophomore at Marshall, said she likes Drinko because its resources provide comfort.
“It’s just really quiet,” Jones said. “Their bathrooms are really pretty, and it’s just comfortable. Not a lot of people around.”
For freshman Raylan Young, Drinko is simply more appealing than Morrow Library.
“Drinko Library is my favorite,” Young said. “I’ve never been in Morrow; it kind of scares me to go in there, so that one’s my favorite.”
Two students preferred to split their time between their dorm and Drinko. Senior Makayla Adams said it came down to how much work she had.
“I most often either study in my dorm or over at Drinko,” Adams said. “If I have a lot of work, I go to Drinko.”
Adams said while Drinko put her in a more focused mentality, her dorm was more convenient at times.
“My dorm is fairly quiet,” Adams said. “Everything I have is already set up there, so it’s a lot more convenient for me. Drinko is really good because it sort of puts you in this mentality of you feel like you have to work because you’re at the library.”
Sophomore Nelson Deems said he chooses between his dorm and Drinko depending on what mood he wants.
“When I study in my room because I have my own private room, it is more to myself,” Deems said. “But the library has more like a, I don’t know how to describe it, it’s more homey if that makes sense. Also, I just like to be out in public and just be in an environment with other people that do the same thing.”
