Local group Signals will open along with heavy rockers Mothership for Corrosion of Conformity’s metal set Wednesday at The V-Club.
Signals front man Tony Waller said his band was “trying to blend two forms of rock and metal” for a more distinct sound on the music scene.
“We dabble in [metal,]” Waller said. “It’s not necessarily that, but we try to touch on it.”
Waller said as an instrumental band it is establishing a versatile performance to work easily with a variety of other groups.
“We are a non denominational band in that we can play with anyone,” Waller said.
As Waller’s first music project, the group takes influence from nationally touring rock acts like Rush, deciding to name its band after the Canadian group’s ninth album.
“This is really a merger as far as ideas between me and Caleb Adkins,” Waller said.
Waller said his tastes were much like Black Sabbath’s music, whereas Adkins, on guitar, is akin to the sounds of Metallica and Lamb of God.
With locals Mike Parker on bass and Steve Barker on drums who form the band’s second half, Waller said the band had “two of the most seasoned musicians in town.”
Signals used open mic nights at Black Sheep Burritos & Brews to familiarize and establish its live performances.
After this, Waller said the band went on to play several venues before meeting success with a “good crowd” in Lexington during its performance with Cincinnati rock group Mad Anthony.
Although Signals is new on Huntington’s block since beginning live shows in November 2015, it has had the chance to play alongside other popular locals Ona and Sly Roosevelt.
“Ona was amazing,” Waller said.
Although Signals has yet to release any instrumental material physically or via the web, Waller said the band was looking foreword to completing an EP at an upcoming but unknown time.
Waller said that the expansion of Huntington’s music and arts scene has brought a “broader” array of styles close to home.
Looking forward locally, Signals has plans to make a return to the V-Club to open for Every Time I Die in June.
