Women’s basketball team looks to remain undefeated against Alabama A&M

The Marshall University women’s basketball team looks to remain undefeated this season as it hosts Alabama A&M University Saturday.

The contest will put two contrastable teams against one another in terms of both win-loss records and overall experience.

While the Thundering Herd come into the contest unblemished at 5-0, the Bulldogs are still seeking its first win, sitting at 0-5.

Marshall head coach Matt Daniel said the key to remaining undefeated is being consistent.

“They [Alabama A&M] are really athletic, so we have to constantly remain solid on defense throughout the game.” Daniel said. “If we win, it’ll be the best start since ’71-72. I wasn’t even alive then, so it’d be neat to accomplish that and more.”

In terms of experience, the Bulldogs have a veteran roster with seven seniors, whereas Marshall is a young ball club with seven freshman and two seniors.

Half of Marshall’s senior duo is forward Leah Scott, who leads the team in scoring at 17.6 points per game and rebounding with an average of 7.8 per game.

Scott said it is important for her team to stick to the game plan against Alabama A&M.

“They like to play fast, so they’re going to want us to play fast,” Scott said. “They are mostly guards, so we’ve got to stay down on defense. It’s going to be a matter of team defense so we’ve got to play smart and protect the ‘M.’”

The other half of the senior pairing is point guard Norrisha Victrum.

Victrum leads the team in assist per game at 4.6 to go along with 9.4 points per game.

Alabama A&M is led by senior forward Janie Myles who leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 10.8 PPG and 6.8 RPG.

Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center.
