Cole named C-USA Freshman of the Week
Marshall volleyball setter Madelyn Cole was named this week’s Conference USA volleyball’s Freshman of the Week.
This award comes from a standout performance for her against Florida Atlantic University. She recorded a personal record of 55 assists to defeat the Owls.
Madelyn Cole is the third player on the Marshall volleyball team this year to receive the C-USA award, she is joined by Madison Hill and Jac’Cara Walker.
“I was honored,” said Cole. “Honestly, I woke up from a nap and all my teammates started saying congrats to me. My roommate, Jac’cara Walker, said welcome to the club since she has also won it a couple of times.”
Cole is a freshman from Dallas, Texas that has made a name for herself on the Herd squad.
“We’re all excited for her because she plays with so much joy in the game, and she plays with so much emotion. She’s so talented,” head coach Mitch Jacobs said.
Cole said her best moment so far is finally getting a block in the FAU game.
“I’ve been so frustrated about it, and my whole team was happy for me — definitely a memory I will not forget,” said Cole.
“She’s been good for us all year,” said Jacobs. “With the need to put Kayla Simmons down for a period of time because of the bad foot, Madelyn stepped up big. It was huge — there was a lot of pressure on that situation and she handled it.”
Cole described herself as the “silent assassin.”
“I’m pretty quiet, but I am there when the team needs me,” she said.
“Madelyn gives us a lot of options; she has a lot of skill. As she keeps developing, we will see how she changes. She will be up for the challenge, I believe she will be,” said Jacobs.
“I am interested to see how we finish. I’m interested to see everyone step and to get into conference and see everyone show out,” said Cole.
The Marshall volleyball team will travel to Texas this Friday for their first match up against North Texas.
“I’m from Texas and so is Madison, so there will be a lot of fans coming,” Cole said.
