President Gilbert to host Health and Wellness Fair
In celebration of the 2016 Investiture of Marshall University’s new president, Dr. Jerome “Jerry” Gilbert, the College of Health Professions will be hosting a Marshall University Health and Wellness Fair Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Memorial Student Center Plaza.
A total of 26 organizations from both on and off campus will be in attendance, including the College of Health Professions, Marshall Health, the MU Counseling Center, Cabell Huntington Health Department, ROTC, Triad Tech, the Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics and other health organizations from the Huntington area.
Services include blood glucose screenings from the MH Chertow Diabetes Center, bone density information and screenings from MH Orthopedics, hearing screenings from COHP Communication Disorders, blood pressure screenings from the COHP School of Nursing, pulmonary function tests from St. Mary’s Respiratory Care, functional movement screenings from the COHP SOPT, condoms and STD prevention information from MH OB/GYN, pull-up and push-up challenges from ROTC and five-minute chair massages from Triad Tech. Services will be offered by the organizations as part of the fair for free.
“The fair is not only a great way to interact with the community, but also to promote health and wellness on campus,” said Megan Archer, university relations specialist.
Huntington was shown to be America’s most overweight city in 2014 when The Telegraph announced that a study showed that the proportion of obese US citizens in the city grew to 27 percent.
Archer went on to explain that since Huntington is not in the healthiest region in the world anything that the COHP, or Marshall as a whole, can do to promote healthy living or a healthy lifestyle is good and important for the community.
The Health and Wellness Fair will be open to the public and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In case of rain, the fair will be moved to the basement of the Memorial Student Center in room BE5.
