Volleyball team beats Charlotte, gets first conference win of season
Marshall University’s volleyball team earned its first C-USA win of the season Friday as it defeated the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 3-2.
The team’s win, which came at the Cam Henderson center, gives the Herd a 10-5 record on the year.
The Herd’s accuracy was key to gaining the first set advantage.
However, the team lost the momentum in the second and third set. This allowed the 49ers to gain advantage of the game.
Marshall would bounce back and prove to be more focused in the fourth set with its eyes on taking the match to the fifth set and was successful.
Coach Jacobs said he was very pleased with the team’s performance.
“We knew that they have good players,” Jacobs said. “So, we knew that we were going to have to win the serve and pass games, and I thought they kicked our butt in that department for the first two sets. We really improved in that category in the latter stages of this match.”
Jacobs said he was exceptionally pleased with the performance of sophomore Kayla Simmons, who he felt played her best match of her collegiate career.
Simmons said the team started off strong, fell a little bit in the middle and were able bounce back in the end.
“They started serving really well,” Simmons said. “We couldn’t handle it at first, and then we started taking control of the ball. That’s when we started winning.”
Marshall’s next match is Sunday against Louisiana Tech University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center.
