Book sale raises funds for Women’s Studies program

The Marshall University Women’s Studies Department held its annual book sale Tuesday at the Memorial Student Center. Books ranged from .75 cents to $1.50 depending on if the book was a mass-market paperback, trade paperback or a hardcover.

Assistant English professor Hilary Brewster started the sale at 9 a.m. before heading to teach her women’s studies class.

“So the book sale is one of our fundraisers that we do twice a year,” Brewster said. “Once in the fall and once in the spring and the money that we raise from the book sale goes to fund different women’s studies projects throughout the year.”

Brewster said the money raised from the event will go towards an end of the year celebration next week or for speakers and events.

The funds from the book sale support a variety of events and other organizations supported by the women’s studies department.

“We bring speakers to campus, we do films, we have a book club that meets once a semester, we have the masquerade ball which is a once a year event around Halloween in October,” Brewster said. “It is like a dance party with food and a silent auction. We also help other organizations in Huntington like the Contact Rape Crisis Center or Branches Domestic Violence Shelter.”

Sophomore student Alex O’Donnell said he took an interest in the book sale while passing by.

“I think the book sale is really good because there are not too many good sources to find books,” O’Donnell said. “Like, Rachel Ray cooking books are here and they are really cheap and I think that it is really good. It goes to a good cause and to support the women’s studies program and so I think it is really good. While passing by I saw the books and you never know when you may find a good book so that is why I came over.”

All proceeds benefit the women’s studies department.
