Lecture series unites community members

The Renaissance has long fascinated art scholars, many of whom consider it one of the most influential eras in art history. The Huntington Area Art Society’s ongoing lecture series continued Wednesday at Pullman Square’s Cellar Door, hosted by program director and Marshall University School of Art and Design assistant professor Dr. Heather Stark.

Entitled “The Southern Renaissance: Style and Power in Quattrocento Florence,” Stark’s presentation covered ancient works emphasizing distinct artistic characteristics of the 15th century. Much of the evening was spent comparing works by way of audience participation, with local art enthusiasts and visual arts students adding to Stark’s discussion.

“It’s a relationship-building opportunity for us to get to know community members who are interested in the arts and want to know more,” said director of Marshall’s School of Art and Design Sandra Reed. “Out of 12 months, we do three sets of four. Dr. Stark is the lead presenter, meaning that in the fall and spring, she has agreed to do three presentations.”

In addition to Dr. Stark, the lecture series will include presentations by a rotating roster of art professors for the other two sessions. The series will also be held this summer for the first time, marking its first calendar year at the Cellar Door.

Scheduled to take place on the second Wednesday of each month, the lecture series will continue March 9 and April 13 at 6:30pm. Seating is limited, with a $10 admission charge for non-visual arts students and community members.
