Marshall students had the opportunity to forget the stress of school and midterms while creating letter boards in a group setting at a DIY event Wednesday in the Don Morris Room of the Memorial Student Center.

During the event, the second installment in the Campus Activities Board’s year-long DIY series, students were able to make the DIY letter boards with the help of CAB members at each table. Attendees seemed to enjoy the evening, according to CAB member Erica Wickham.

“It’s definitely one of the harder DIYs that we do, because there’s a lot of room for error,” Wickham said. “But right now, it looks like they’re turning out pretty great, and everyone seems to be in a good mood.” 

Students such as first-year pharmacy student Caroline Putnam took advantage of the opportunity to get out of their classrooms and de-stress from midterms.

“I thought tonight was a lot of fun,” Putnam said. “It was more hands-on than some of the other DIYs I’ve been to, which I really appreciated. It took away some of the stress that comes with school and midterms.” 

The Campus Activities Board gives students a chance to create something unique for themselves, which not all universities offer.

“I think it’s really cool that Marshall gives opportunities like this to students,” Wickham said. “I have friends at other universities, and they’ve always said that their schools don’t do stuff like this, so that’s a really cool opportunity for us.” 

Wickham said people always seem to be really appreciative of what CAB does, and that’s what makes it all worth it. 

CAB hosts DIY events every month, except for December, and Wickham said she thinks that everyone should take advantage of the DIY series at least once.

“Students should absolutely come to these events because it’s so much easier to make something like this in a group environment than to try to do it on your own and gather all of those materials,” Wickham said. “Plus, it’s free!” 

CAB members use student input to decide what DIYs to add to their series. There are different factors that come into play when choosing the schedule, such as how feasible a specific DIY would be with a large group of people, how many people could realistically do the DIY and how much time it would take.

CAB’s next DIY event is set to be the Hydro Dip at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 in the Don Morris Room of the MSC.
