Column: Football season is the best season
For many of us, our favorite time of year has arrived: football season. Most college programs kicked off their football season last week and there were many amazing highlights. Oklahoma with a surprising loss, USC with a huge upset and some plays that were uncalled for.
College football is the best season. If you have never been to a college football game, you have to go at least once in your life. It is an unexplainable feeling. The atmosphere is incredible and, no matter what differences you have with other people, you are cheering for the same team.
Let’s talk about some highlights from the opening weekend. We knew that the Alabama and USC game was going to be interesting, but we didn’t know that it was going to be shocking. 52-6? What happened Cali? This all-star team just couldn’t keep up. To go with this tough loss, USC offensive linebacker Jabari Ruffin was ejected for a groin stomp against Minkah Fitzpatrick. Another athlete was ejected for a flagrant hit.
LSU’s Josh Boutte’s hit against D’cota Dixon not only got him ejected, but has him suspended from LSU’s game this week at home. And I am sure many people were not expecting what came from the Houston and Oklahoma game opening weekend. Houston came out and showed that they are not a team to be forgotten, beating Oklahoma 33-23. The #3 team in the nation beat by the #15 team.
Some of my favorite teams got off to a great start in the opening weekend. Tennessee won over Appalachian State 20-13, University of South Carolina barely made it past Vanderbilt winning 13-10. Can we talk about the Notre Dame upset? They lost by three points in a double overtime! Longhorn running back D’Onta Foreman had 131 rushing yards in this season opener. The highest rushing yards for the Fighting Irish was from Tarean Folston with eighty-eighty yards. Sorry Notre Dame, but as our beloved Coach Taylor from Friday Night Lights would say, “Texas Forever.”
Not all teams have started their season yet, one team in particular kicks off this Saturday. You know who I’m talking about, none other than our own Thundering Herd. Marshall is looking to kick off their season against Morgan State. Morgan State lost their first game of the season 51-24 against Holy Cross. Hopefully this means that we can come out strong and bring on the Herd. We only lost three games last year and we’re looking to keep that winning record high. Our quarterback Chase Litton had 2,605 yards last year and had twenty-three touchdowns. Did I mention that he’s only a sophomore? This year should be a great year for our Herd.
We are Marshall!
