Marshall men’s soccer overcomes South Caroline Gamecocks, 2-1
September 17, 2017
Marshall’s men’s soccer team defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks with a final score of 2-1.
Marshall came in looking to dominate like in their previous matchup against Eastern Illinois. Both teams were aggressive to start the game, with each side committing six fouls a piece.
The Gamecocks stood their ground early on as the Thundering Herd looked to control the pace of the game. Out of five shot attempts for Marshall in the first half, only one was on goal, presenting a score of 0-0 at half.
That quickly changed in the second half as Marshall forward Lewis Knight scored his seventh goal of the season coming off a nice assist from Carlos Diaz-Salcedo.
Jamil Roberts pushed the lead to two for Marshall, as the freshman received a nice pass off of a double-assist from Dion Stergiotis and Adi Dakwar.
At the 11-minute mark, the pressure was on Marshall as South Carolina’s Benjamin Gilligan scored his second goal of the season as it was knocked in unassisted off a rebound.
The Thundering Herd held their ground in the final few moments of the game, securing its fifth win of the season.
“We were just able to be patient with the ball,” Stergiotis said. “We weren’t forcing it; we were just keeping it moving with lines.”
Marshall looked in sync with one another as their crisp, sharp passes helped them control the speed and direction of the game.
“Well, I think it was mid-way through the first half we made a change tactically,” Marshall head coach Chris Grassie said. “We put a bit more pressure on them and got a bit more width out of our play.”
The Thundering Herd’s next game will be Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., as the team takes a road trip to take on Northern Kentucky.
