‘Shakespeare’ topic of Thursday Yeager lecture
The Society of Yeager Scholars at Marshall University will present “Shakespeare 400 Years On: In States Unborn and Accents Yet Unknown” at the Brad D. Smith Foundation Hall Thursday.
The event is designed to educate the Marshall community on the historical perspective of Shakespeare and how, after 400 years, his writing and style is still applicable today. The guest speakers will be John O’Connor and Kelly O’Connor, both Shakespeare scholars.
John O’Connor is a professor at Cornell University in Washington, D.C. and Kelly O’Connor teaches theatre and English at a high school.
Senior classics and Latin major Abby Pullen, one of the six students from the Wolfe Family Class of 2017 who coordinated the symposium lecture, said they try to get speakers who will be appealing to everyone. John O’Connor is one of the professors they met when they studied abroad at the University of Oxford in England.
“I think it’s beneficial in a way that we read Shakespeare in our beginning English classes, and it’s helpful to learn about how to put his words in context and not only talk about how popular they,” Pullen said.
The lecture is open to every Marshall student and will last from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
