Marshall tennis advances in Conference USA Tournament opener

The Marshall University tennis team defeated 12th-seeded Florida Atlantic University Thursday with a 4-0 decision to advance to the second round of the Conference USA Tournament in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Herd got out to an early advantage with its performance in doubles play, where the pairing of juniors Derya Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya won the No. 1 flight, 6-4.

Rachel Morales and Maddie Silver teamed up to take the second doubles match of the day as well with the season-long undefeated combo winning 6-3. The third doubles match wasn’t completed, but the Herd tandem of Marija Bogicevic and Anne Gulsrud led 5-4 when the match was called.

Marshall took the momentum from doubles play into singles, where the Herd recorded three victories, while three other singles matches went unfinished.

Turhan defeated FAU’s Lyndsey Boos, 6-3, 6-0 in the match’s No. 1 spot. Morales posted a similar performance as the Herd’s No. 2, where she defeated FAU’s Ana Gutierrez in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Pomyatinskaya capped the off the Herd’s victory and ensured Marshall went unscathed for the entirety of the match, going undefeated in both doubles and singles play. Pomyatinskaya won in straight sets as well, 6-4, 6-2.

The singles matches of the Herd’s No. 3 spot Silver, No. 5 spot Bogicevic and No. 6 spot Gulsrud were not completed.

The Herd will face Old Dominion University 3 p.m. Friday in the conference tournament quarterfinals.
