Women’s golf team finishes sixth in Hoya Invitational

Marshall University’s golf team finished sixth Tuesday in the 11th annual Hoya Invitational in Beallsville, Maryland.

Princeton University won the 10-team tournament by 13 strokes at 939. Georgetown University, the tournament host, finished second at 952.

Freshman Joey Walz carded the best finish of her Marshall career, shooting a 239 to finish eighth in the tournament.

Marshall head coach Tiffany Prats said she was proud of the freshman’s performance.

“I’m happy that Joey got her first top-10 finish,” Prats said in a news release. “Today, the conditions were really rough, being cold and windy on a course that didn’t allow for many low scores. She hit the ball well this week and also hit good shots around the greens.”

Prats said despite Walz’ individual performance, she feels her team needs to make adjustments before the Conference USA Championship, which begins April 18 in Fort Myers, Florida.

“As a team, we have some work that has to get done before conference,” Prats said. “These girl have the game. I just need them to be fully committed and willing to work.”

Prats said the team has to work on eliminating its big numbers.

“Every team makes bogeys,” Prats said. “But the top teams don’t make doubles. As I look at stats, that is where we have to improve. If we make a mistake we have to be willing to make bogey and not try to make something happen that isn’t there. That is when you make big numbers. Over the next week, we will be working on taking what the course gives us.”
