Dixon named C-USA Co-Pitcher of the Week

Marshall junior Jordan Dixon was named Conference USA Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Dixon earned three victories on the mound over the weekend in the team’s series against the University of Texas at El Paso Miners. Dixon posted a 1.37 ERA and recorded 17 strikeouts in her three starts.

“She really grinded it out and is deserving of this recognition after recording all three wins,” head coach Shonda Stanton said.

In the opening game of the three-game series, Dixon pitched the full five innings before the game was ended via the run-rule. She allowed just four hits and struck out 10 batters, including the side in the fourth inning.

In the second game of the weekend slate, Dixon came on in relief in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and Marshall already in a 1-0 hole. Dixon immediately got out of the jam, an act she duplicated an inning later with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Dixon started the third and final game of the weekend as she pitched the full seven innings, allowing just earned while collecting five strikeouts.

In addition to her performance on the mound, Stanton said Dixon had a message for her teammates with the team trying to close out the sweep Sunday.

“Her one word that she shared with the team Sunday morning was ‘dependable’,” Stanton said. “Dixon talked how ability does not matter without dependability, and it was great to see her live that throughout the weekend against a very aggressive and solid hitting team.”

Pitching coach Chanda Bell said Dixon set the tone for the start to conference play with her solid weekend showing.

“This past weekend was a great way to start conference play,” Bell said. “We are proud of the way Jordan came out this weekend and was able to take three wins from an aggressive hitting team in UTEP. She showed once again, that she us strong enough to be a dominating pitcher in our conference.”

Marshall softball will be back in action 1 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts University of Toledo in a double header at Dot Hicks Softball Field in Huntington.
