Marshall University’s tennis team (3-2) heads to Louisville, Kentucky Friday to face the University of Louisville (6-1).
The Herd won its last matches against Morehead State University (0-6) and Radford University (6-1) Feb. 5.
Last season, Marshall overpowered Louisville to win, 5-2, on the Herd’s home court.
Louisville is coming off a split last weekend as it beat Murray State University (2-1) but fell to Middle Tennessee State University (4-4) in a match that came down to the final swing.
Marshall head coach John Mercer said Louisville is a competitive ACC team. Mercer said he is sure Louisville will be prepared, especially considering the match will be on the Cardinals’ home court.
Marshall junior Derya Turhan said she feels as if she is expected to lead the team and grab some wins in the process.
“It’s always great to win,” Turhan said. “I feel pretty confident playing against Louisville.”
Mercer said going forward, he is confident his team will do well if everyone remains healthy.
“It just depends on our health,” Mercer said. “We have a six player roster, and it takes six players to play. So, if something happens that could be big trouble.”
Mercer said from the beginning of the match until the end, he teaches his athletes to fight for every point.
Friday’s match begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.
