CAB opens semester with ‘Screen on the Green’
The first week of classes at Marshall University have passed and the first weekend of the semester also means more Campus Activities Board events. The first Screen on the Green took place on the Common’s field with a showing of the movie “Tarzan.” CAB came down before the showing at 8 p.m. to set up the free popcorn station and music for the patrons to listen to before the movie began.
“I like to watch movies and it’s a free movie,” said Freshman McKenzie Darby. “It’s like a drive in movie theatre without a car and I thought that was cool.”
Every year students vote on what kind of movies they want to see and CAB even shows some movies that were recently or are still in theatres. David Yates’ “Tarzan” was released in theaters on July 1.
“Thursday nights are either you’re going out or staying in,” said CAB Co Chief Executive Officer Tory Lanman. “We want to give a better option to students instead of going to bars or parties and getting in trouble, so it’s a way for people to come out and relieve stress without being stuck in their dorm room or having the option of going out and doing illegal activities.”
CAB events help freshman have a place to go and meet new people or have somewhere to go with friends they just recently made.
“I think it’s a good place to meet new friends,” said freshman Brianna Meade. “And it helps strengthen the friendships you already have.”
CAB is a student organization that offers people the chance to get more involved on campus and help make Marshall activities more interesting for the students. “CAB gives students an opportunity to do things they can’t afford otherwise,” said CAB member Justin Hurt. “They’re the only organization that I’m aware of that does things for all of the students at Marshall.”
Thursday was the first night for the Screen on the Green event, but it will not be the last one. Beginning Aug. 1, 2016 Throwback Thursday will be another event similar to Screen on the Green, but will include movies such as, “Finding Nemo,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Goonies,” “Hocus Pocus,” and “Remember the Titans.”
CAB holds CAB on the Plaza every Wednesday at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Free Concert Fridays starts Aug. 26, where local bands will play on campus for free between 12 a.m. and 1 p.m.
