Marshall University’s School of Art and Design celebrated the faculty exhibition at the Visual Art Center’s Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery with a closing reception Friday.

The show featured works by most of the faculty of the College of Art and Design, including Mary Grassell, Daniel Kaufmann, Maribea Barnes, Sandra Reed, Ian Hagarty, Hayson Harrison, Peter Massing, Hanna Kozlowski-Slone, Miyuki Akai Cook, Jonathan Cox and Frederick Bartolovic.

“I started this job three weeks ago, so it was really nice to walk in and get to see firsthand what the faculty work looked like,” Melissa Yungbluth, gallery director and facilities coordinator, said. “I had only seen everything online and I was really blown away to see the caliber of artwork that is being made by this faculty.”

The exhibit had different types of art, including paintings, printmaking, fiber, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, foundations, photography and more on display.

“I was definitely honored,” Hanna Kozlowski-Slone, assistant professor of foundations at the College of Art and Design, said. “This is actually the beginning of my second year working in the school of art and design here at Marshall and first time actually exhibiting my own work with the work of the rest of the faculty.”

The exhibit was a part of the President Investiture and will be free and open to the public until Sept. 30. Yungbluth said she thinks this is a great opportunity for students.

“This is a good chance for people who are interested in the program to see what is being made by the professors,” Yungbluth said. “If they are interested in a class, then come and see firsthand what that person makes.”

When the exhibit closes, the artwork will be returned to the faculty members, where many of the them are having their art moved into a different exhibit.

“I am going to be putting these two pieces in a show at Anderson University in South Carolina,” Kowlowski-Slone said about her artwork in the exhibit. “Then I have a solo exhibition coming up in the fall of 2017 that will be at Mary Baldwin College.”

The next exhibit at the Visual Art Center’s Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery will be selected works by a graphic designer named Mirko Ilić. The exhibit will open Sept. 30 and end Oct. 28. The reception for the exhibit will be 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 and will be followed with an artist talk at 7 p.m.
