Marshall University’s tennis team wraps up its regular season with a three-match homestead beginning Friday as the team faces the University of Cincinnati.
Marshall hosts Xavier University Sunday and Old Dominion University April 16 to close out its regular season before heading to Murfsfreeboro, Tennessee for the Conference USA Tournament, which begins April 21.
The Herd (8-9, 1-2) lost its last match against Winthrop University Sunday, 6-1, which snapped its four-match winning streak.
Junior Rachel Morales said despite the loss, the team plans to head into Friday’s match with a positive mindset.
“We had a pretty tough lost last weekend,” Morales said. “So, I think we just need to refocus and have a lot of energy going into these next matches.”
Junior Derya Turhan was the only member of the team to register a singles win against Winthrop.
Turhan leads the Herd with an 11-3 singles record this season with all wins coming from the top spot.
Sophomore Marja Bogicevic said Turhan is a valuable asset and her consistent performance helps keep the rest of the team encouraged.
“I love having her on the team,” Bogicevic said. “Plus, she’s our number one player.”
Bogicevic said the Herd’s goal is to stay motivated during the final stretch of the regular season before the Conference USA Tournament.
“We are all tired,” Bogicevic said. “But we all want to finish hard and successfully.”
Cincinnati (9-7, 1-1) heads into Friday’s matchup after suffering a 5-0 loss to crosstown rival Xavier Wednesday on its home court.
Friday’s match begins at 1 p.m. at the Huntington Tennis Club.
