Water Bottle Week, an annual event at Blenko Glass in Milton, West Virginia, commemorated the long history of Blenko Glass and the original 384 style water bottles it made almost a hundred years ago.
Starting Monday, Jan. 19, a new design for the 384 water bottle was released, called the nano bottle, which is significantly smaller than the original 384 bottle.
“I love seeing people’s reactions to the new colors and this year’s new nano bottles,” said Clove Sergent, Blenko glass tour guide. “People love them because they are smaller, adorable and more convenient for space.”
The 384 water bottle became popular in 1938, having been designed to fit into the shelves of electrical ice boxes without taking up too much space before larger fridges were invented.
“I think this event is important because we are honoring the classic 384 and its relevance and popularity because it has been popular since 1938. It has also been keeping the Blenko name alive because this factory has been here in Milton for over a hundred years,” Sergent said.
The 384 water bottle is designed to be slender and has a circular indent in the center that makes it easier to handle without worrying about dropping it. There are also pour spouts on both sides of the rim.
“Blenko is all about color, so they wanted to make a functional piece of glass during that time but also make it look beautiful and give it a vibrant appearance,” Sergent said.
The annual celebration of the 384 water bottle has been taking place for almost a decade, and its popularity has increased over time.
“It’s a little bit hectic during this week, but I like seeing people’s reactions to the new water bottles,” said Lindsey Cutler, Blenko Glass sales associate.
Each year’s celebration includes something new design-wise for the 384 water bottle.
“There’s always something new to expect. People are always anticipating the newest design or what we’re going to release next,” Sergent said.
The water bottles, as well as other glass items, have become collectables for many people.
Blenko Glass will also have other events this year, such as their upcoming Valentine’s Day event, where people can have a dining experience at Blenko Glass while also making their own glass items.
Its biggest upcoming event is the Festival of Glass, which doesn’t have a set date yet.
“There will be glass classes, demonstrations for people to admire the process of glass making, live music, food trucks and plenty of activities, even for little kids,” Sergent said.
