Students looking to zip around campus faster might have an option with soon-to-be-implemented rentable scooters.
SGA apprentice Mariya Brandon drafted a resolution supporting a partnership with a rentable scooter company to bring scooters to Marshall’s campus.
What started as an assignment for SGA quickly became a meaningful project for her.
For Brandon, it wasn’t just an idea, it was a way to help students who struggle with long distances, heavy schedules or mobility challenges.
“I know some have a hard time getting around campus, and it made me think of when I visited other colleges, how there were rentable scooters,” Brandon said, “so many people were using them, and it helped so much with getting around campus, which is why I believe rentable scooters would be a great addition to Marshall’s campus.”
Her interest in the issue grew after a recent SGA tabling event called “Cookies for Concern,” where students repeatedly mentioned the long distances between buildings.
Brandon said those conversations sparked the idea.
Seeing her solution come to life was both exciting and rewarding, she said, because it was a chance to identify a campus problem and offer a solution.
“It feels so great and fulfilling to be able to have the opportunity to make a change that positively impacts the student body and the community,” she said.
As an SGA apprentice, Mariya said she focuses on learning how SGA operates, connecting with students and identifying problems on campus. Her goal, she said, is not only to listen to concerns, but to find solutions to problems on campus and to uplift the Marshall community.
