Businesses prepare for Career Expo Tuesday

A Career Expo hosted by Marshall University’s Career Services will take place in the Don Morris room of the Marshall University Memorial Student Center Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The expo, which happens every semester, has employers come to recruit students for internships, entry-level full-time employment and jobs while still attending university. The event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m.

“It is a great opportunity for a student to network with these companies,” Debby Stoler, assistant director of development and outreach for Career Services at Marshall University, said.

Stoler said there are not many events that allow students to receive the business cards and contact information directly from the recruiters that would be hiring them and said the expo is a great place to network.

Over 80 different businesses will be there. Some of the businesses in attendance will be Brick Street Insurance, Cabell Huntington Health Department, Enterprise, IBM, Northfolk Southern, People’s Bank and Pepsi.

Stoler said the expo is a formal event and that business attire to express professionalism is encouraged. Career Services is a referral agency for both Dress for Success for women and Hire Attire for men. Stoler said if students are in need of professional clothing for the event, they can visit Career Services and they will help get students the clothes they need.

Another tip for the expo that Stoler gave is to learn how to introduce yourself so that recruiters can know what your career goals, technical skills and personality are like.

“Once you make that connection and they know who you are, they are going to say something back and that starts the conversation,” Stoler said.

Stoler also said that students are encouraged to bring copies of their resume in folders. Career Services is available to help students with the creation or editing of their resume. Students may also print up to 10 copies of their resume on resume paper there.

Stoler said students can go onto their JobTrax account to see what employers will be at the event and what exactly they will be looking for in recruits in order to find ways to help them stand out a bit more from the crowd.
