In order to help students plan their futures and make their dreams become a reality, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. hosted a vision board party Thursday evening in the Memorial Student Center.

“The point of us doing [the vision board party] is to just have people sit down and really think about what they want for their future,” Lauren Washington, a communication studies major and president of Alpha Kappa Alpha, said Thursday.

Fifteen people attended the party, and Washington encouraged them to cut inspiring words and pictures to put on their boards. They could also color the board and add different types of paper.

“As students, it is good to see what you want and have it up in your room or in your dorm room,” Washington said.

Washington, who began planning the event in early December, said she was most excited to see other people’s vision boards because it can “make you say ‘oh, I want that too,’ or ‘maybe, I should think about what else I want for myself or maybe dream bigger.’”

Senior public relations major Olayinka Bamiro was one student who attended the party.

“I have a lot of goals for 2019,” Bamiro said. “I felt like maybe I’ll manifest them more, and it’ll work out more for me if I actually put it in a visual so I can look at it and maybe stay more motivated.”

“I want to just improve my mental health, not try to stress myself out as much. I want to really just try to be the best me,” Bamiro said about her visions.

Kayla Saintagne, a junior elementary education major, said she decided to attend the vision board party to find her vision. “And I’ve always wanted to do a vision board and see what I want to do and get the experience,” she said.

Saintagne said she pasted “Style: it doesn’t have to hurt” on her vision board. “I don’t have to make myself someone who I’m not. I can be stylish in my own way,” Saintagne said.

Saintagne also included a picture of a house and flower, surrounded by the quotes “Some things are bigger than banking” and “Make your dream a reality,” on her vision board.

Carolyn Ball, a senior marketing major, attached “things that describe me” and pictures of dogs, because “I see lots of dogs in my future.” Others included pictures of celebrities like Michelle Obama.

The vision board party is an annual Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. event, which was shared via social media, group messages and email. The sorority’s mission is “Service to All Mankind.”
