Student Resource Center pops another series this semester

To reach more students, Marshall University’s Student Resource Center is providing popcorn along with career resources in its new series, Get it Poppin’ with Pop in Tuesdays. Tuesday was the first of five events this semester, which took place in the Memorial Student Center.

Get it Poppin’ with Pop in Tuesdays is an open house to introduce students to faculty members at the Student Resource Center, eat popcorn, receive information packets and provide a setting to discuss any questions students have regarding their career or study skills.

Danny Daugherty, major exploration consultant, said she hopes this open house will have an informal atmosphere to help students feel comfortable and not to be bashful about anything they would like to discuss.

“We hope to see more students stop by as each open house progresses, and that they had a positive experience,” Daugherty said. “Hopefully they will tell their friends to come see us, and it won’t be overlooked.”

Daugherty said creating opportunities like Get it Poppin’ with Pop in Tuesdays allows the Student Resource Center to reach students that might not come to the center otherwise.

“We don’t want to sit here at desks and wait for students,” Daugherty said. “We want to take our services and meet students where they are and be more proactive about it.”

The Student Resource Center is where students can talk to someone about their career path, whether they are stumped or need guidance with a goal. The Student Resource Center has two locations, one in the student center and another located on Fifth Avenue next to Harless Dining Hall.

The 5th Avenue location focuses on helping upperclassmen, graduate students and alumni, whereas the student center office is for freshmen and sophomores.

Mirek Bialk, major exploration consultant, said although each location is designated for a particular group of students, they will not turn away a student in need at either location.

The Student Resource Center has four more open houses for Get it Poppin’ with Pop in Tuesdays: Oct. 17, Nov. 7, Nov. 21 and Dec. 5. They also have another series, Workshop Wednesdays, regarding more career advice, tips for studying and exams, resume development and time management. The next date for Workshop Wednesdays is Sept. 27. at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the student center.
