Marshall students mail postcards to serving soldiers

Marshall University students had the opportunity to thank a serving soldier overseas by filling out postcards with their own personal messages Wednesday in the Memorial Student Center.

The cards will now be mailed to military members that are currently deployed in Afghanistan.

“I’d just like to say, from personal experience, mail call is one of the best times for a soldier when it comes to being overseas,” Diane Gutierrez, of Marshall University Military and Veterans Affairs, said.

Gutierrez served in the military for 17 years and is now retired, but has hopes of hosting this event again.

“If we get enough postcards, I’d like to continue this program to at least twice a year,” he said. “Soldiers can be having the worst day, but receiving something as small as a postcard during mail call can provide them with hope. And to them, that can mean everything.”
