Local salon promotes prom dresses for charity

True Blue Salon partnered with Branches Domestic Violence Shelter Sunday to put together the Dresses for Domestic Peace event.

The event opened the doors for teenagers in the community to come pick out a dress for the 2015 prom or a formal dance.

The event consisted of dresses that were donated from Yellow Brick Road Prom and Formals and people within the community who donated their prom dresses.

Formal wear for prom and formal events ranged from $25 to $50 and had a range of sizes and styles.

The purpose of the event to give the opportunity to those who may not be able to afford formal wear and 100 percent of the proceeds go to Branches.

Kiarra Sowards, Cabell Midland High School student, said she loved the dress selection.

“They are amazing, such pretty dresses for such a low price,” Sowards said.

Soward’s mother, Valerie Meadows, was also pleased with the selection of dresses to choose from.

“They have a lot of dresses that are cheap, but it also supports a good cause,” Meadows said.

Kristen Kerns, social worker for Branches, has been working for the organization for almost a year.

“I like working with people and hearing the stories of everything the women have gone through,” Kerns said.

Proceeds of this event will assist the Branches Domestic Violence Shelter to help fund the Branches & Branches’ Safe Dates Program.
