Christa Frye and Joseph Frye performed at the Jomie Jazz Center Wednesday in a last minute, impromptu event that gathered different people from the community together.

Christa Frye is a native of Huntington, West Virginia and is currently serving as the instructor of music at Bethel University and an adjunct professor of clarinet at Murray State University. Her students have earned high rankings in solo and ensemble festivals and positions in All-State Bands and Orchestras in states such as West Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky and Florida.

“She graduated from Wayne High School,” Ann Bingham, a professor in the music department said. “So for my students, especially from Wayne County, to see someone whose been so successful who grew up where they did and had the kind of background they have I think is wonderful for them to be able to see what the future holds.”

Joseph Frye is currently the assistant professor of trombone at the University of Tennessee at Martin, coaches chamber ensembles and conducts the UTM Trombone Choir. Joseph Frye also performed for ten years with the 572nd Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains. He became staff sergeant and played different types of trombone.

The concert began at 7:30 p.m. with Christa Frye performing “Pocket-Size Sonata No. 2” by Alec Templeton on the clarinet. Her husband, Joseph Frye, performed next, starting off with “Improvisation No. 1” by Enrique Crespo with the trombone.

They alternated performances throughout the concert, playing songs such as “Der Hölle Rache” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and “Cantilène” by Louis Cahuzac.

Joseph Frye ended with an electronic performance with the trombone called “Ground Round” by Steven Snowden. Christa Frye thanked everyone for coming, and thanked Bingham for working with her since high school. The concert ended with their son, Brayden Frye, singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the alphabet into the microphone.
